Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

Dec 24, 2019

2019 has been a busy year here at Warshauer Law Group. Because we are a family of professionals who care for our clients and their families, we’re focusing our holiday message on what has been happening with our own families. Two big items top this year’s news. First, the long-anticipated wedding of paralegal April Bryant and partner Michael Pérez finally occurred in June, in a lovely ceremony at the old DeKalb County courthouse. Their new blended family now includes three children and two beagles. The beagles, Max and new puppy Scout, are regulars at our office and frequently provide comic relief (beagles are prone to mischief!).

The second item of big news is the addition of attorney Jasper Abbott to our team. Jasper spent his first 8 years out of law school defending medical malpractice cases and representing governments in Section 1983 actions in Oklahoma. After moving to Atlanta, he worked for a top-flight defense firm primarily handling malpractice claims. When the opportunity to join our firm and represent plaintiffs arose, Jasper followed his heart and jumped at the chance. Jasper’s wife, Deah, is working on her master’s degree in Psychology at Georgia State. Together they stay busy keeping up with their 5-year-old son, Alyosha.

Sydney Tatum is our other new employee. She joined us as an administrative assistant last summer when Kate Mize left for law school. Sydney is also working on her master’s degree in Public Administration at Georgia State. Apparently, she can survive on little to no sleep!

The rest of us have been a pretty stable bunch. Juanita Dickerson continues to help us as our office manager. Her big news is that her son Christian was promoted to Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and she moved into a beautiful new home. Justin Womack, who wears so many hats we aren’t sure of his official title, has now been with us for four years and we don’t know what we’d do without him. His calm demeanor belies the fact that he competes in jiu-jitsu and MMA tournaments. He and his wife Kara have two adorable boys, who, fortunately, like basketball and other, more civilized sports!

We are blessed to have three of the best, hardest-working paralegals in the business. April Pérez, Angela Lizer, and Stan Grantham keep the cases moving, the clients’ needs addressed, and the attorneys in line. Thanks to modern technology, Stan has been able to work completely remotely for several years. He and his wife Jeanie recently moved to Fort Payne, Alabama, after several years in Montana so they can be closer to their children and grandchildren. Angela and her boyfriend Deva enjoy traveling and have taken advantage of opportunities to go to some fun and exciting places around the world over the past year, including Iceland, Sri Lanka, and Colombia. April planned an amazing wedding, a fantastic honeymoon trip to Belize in July, and somehow managed to convince Michael to get the aforementioned new puppy. A successful year all around!

Jen Motley, our in-house medical consultant, navigated the college search for the second time, with her daughter Frannie settling on the University of Virginia, where she is a freshman. Her son, Max, is a junior at Georgia and continues to enjoy playing in a band, just like his dad. Jen’s younger daughter, Ceci, is a freshman at Westminster, along with Michael and Lyle’s daughter, Abby. The Motley’s sweet dog, Bo$$ (yes, that is how they spell it), is also a frequent visitor at the office.

Trent Shuping and his wife Lisa are easy to spot around town with their two adorable redheaded daughters. Trent has re-entered the world of competitive running and has secured a place near the front for the Peachtree Road race in 2020. He also plans to participate in the Atlanta marathon, which will be on the same course as the Olympic trials.

Michael and Lyle have also had a very busy year. Lyle’s “extra-curriculars” have occupied a great portion of her time. She is a board member for Second Helpings (a local non-profit focused on combatting food insecurity and food waste, which the firm also collectively supports as volunteers), and is the President-Elect for the 2020-2022 term. She is also the President-Elect of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. We all look forward to her taking over as GTLA’s president in the spring. Given that Michael served in this position 10 years ago, we are well aware that Lyle will have a very busy 2020 and 2021.

Michael finished his two-year term as President of the Georgia chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, was awarded another Wiedemann Wysocki award by the American Association for Justice, and is actually looking forward to not being the leader of any organizations in 2020! His biggest non-professional accomplishment this year was completing the Ironman Florida race in November. It was actually a lot more fun than he anticipated, but perhaps it will take too much time to train for another 140.6-mile triathlon anytime soon. He’ll likely stick to the more reasonable 70.3- mile races.

The Warshauer children are all entering various new stages of their lives: oldest daughter Sarah Beth and her husband Adam blessed them with a second grandchild in April; son Noah is engaged to be married in the spring; daughter Erin started law school at the University of Michigan; daughter Claire moved to Chicago; and youngest daughter Abby is enjoying her freshman year in high school and all that entails. Rosie, the family dog, rules the roost, so to speak, at the office, but is no match for the family’s two chickens, Bojangles and Winnifred, at home.

Professionally, we were pleased that every lawyer in the firm was recognized as a Super Lawyer, including Trent and Jasper as Rising Stars. Outside of the practice, each of the firm’s lawyers continues to take leadership positions in various bar and civic organizations, as well as offering their expertise as presenters at CLE seminars all over the country. We are grateful for the trust our clients place in us, and the confidence of the many referring lawyers who ask us to assist them in their cases. We look forward to opportunities to help many others in the year ahead.

We wish you and yours a safe, healthy, and happy new year!
