How has your work as a trial lawyer prepared you to be a mediator?

I first obtained certification as a mediator in 2001 but had limited opportunities to practice due to case loads and other commitments. I renewed my certification in 2021 and am actively involved in mediation. My partner, Bill Atkins, is also a mediator. In litigation, understanding the system, risks, and benefits is crucial. Experience with motion practice, trial risks, and knowledge of different venues and judges informs our approach. Recent experience allows us to assist clients in mediation, helping them comprehend these factors and choose a more certain path for resolving their cases amicably.
